Heather White, Vice President for Student Life
I am pleased to announce Dr. James Tyger has accepted the position of assistant vice president for Student Life.
Dr. Tyger has served as interim assistant vice president since Aug. 2023. He is a double Gator, having earned a Ph.D. in higher education administration and a J.D. from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Dr. Tyger also earned a Master of Education from Vanderbilt University and a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources Management from Virginia Tech.
As part of his role, Dr. Tyger will lead the newly created Department of Student Engagement. This department will bring together new and existing offices with a focus on creating opportunities for all students to find and build community.
Student Engagement Offices
- Campus Engagement: Oversees Student Government advising, campus events, and traditions.
- Community & Belonging: Offers programs, services, and engagement opportunities for students and student organizations.
- Sorority & Fraternity Life: Provides guidance, education, and support to the Florida Greek community.
- Student Legal Services: Assists students with a wide range of legal needs.
Many of the programs and services previously offered by Student Activities & Involvement (SAI) and the Center for Inclusion & Multicultural Engagement (CIME) have been expanded and incorporated into Student Engagement. As a result, Student Engagement will now replace the departments of SAI and CIME to align with Student Engagement’s goal of creating campus-wide community and belonging for all University of Florida students.
