The Board of Regents has approved Dr. Charles Young, former chancellor of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) as the UF interim president. Dr. Young will assume the position on Nov. 1.

Young, one of the most respected leaders in higher education, was chancellor of UCLA from 1968 until his retirement in 1997. In the California University System, chancellor is the equivalent of president in State University System of Florida. During Young’s 29-year tenure, UCLA’s annual operating budget increased from $170 million to about $2 billion. The number of endowed chairs rose from one to 120 and the endowment from $19 million to about $1 billion. UCLA has also earned more athletic national championships than any other institution in the nation.

“As a long time admirer of Dr. Young’s work at UCLA, I am delighted to learn that he is willing to bring his extensive experience and insight to the service of this great university,” said President John V. Lombardi.

A nationwide search for a permanent president will begin shortly. The new president is expected to arrive on campus by the start of the 2000-2001 academic year.
