Institutional Review Board

Winfred M. Phillips, Vice President for Research & Kenneth I. Berns, Vice President for Health Affairs

The Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) at the University of Florida are making several changes to their operating procedures. These changes have become necessary for us to remain in compliance with federal regulations. Your continuing cooperation with the IRBs is appreciated.

The IRBs are currently requesting copies of all Department of Health and Human Service (DHHS) grant applications. Regulations require that the IRB review the “Entire grant application, exclusive of any appendices.” The board is currently requesting these applications but on September 1st they will no longer review any protocol that does not include the application if DHHS funding is involved.

Training and certification requirements for both faculty and staff are also evolving. The University is requiring research investigators and staff to take the NIH computer based training module. The IRB office will forward information on training requirements.
