Dr. Brian Hoh Named Dean of the University of Florida College of Medicine

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni and Friends,

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Brian Hoh has been appointed dean of the University of Florida College of Medicine following a nationwide search. The appointment is effective Aug. 7. C. Parker Gibbs Jr., MD, the William F. Enneking and William E. Anspach Professor for Orthopaedic Surgery and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, will serve as acting dean from Aug. 1-6.

As the largest of the six colleges within the UF academic health center, the College of Medicine plays a vital role in advancing our university’s mission through transformative education, groundbreaking research and exceptional patient care. The dean’s leadership is critical to shaping the future of health and medicine at UF and throughout the state of Florida, and I am confident Dr. Hoh is the right leader to guide the college’s next chapter of excellence.

Dr. Hoh is a distinguished physician-scientist, educator and academic leader who has served the University of Florida for two decades, most recently as chair of the nationally recognized Lillian S. Wells Department of Neurosurgery and chief of medical staff at UF Health Shands.

Nationally and internationally, Dr. Hoh is recognized as one of the foremost leaders in neurosurgery. He has served as president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, chaired major professional organizations and contributed extensively to advancing standards in patient care, research and education. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

His record as a clinician-scientist includes more than 17 years of continuous NIH funding and pioneering research focused on stroke, brain aneurysms and cerebrovascular disease. He was recognized as the nation’s highest NIH-funded neurosurgery investigator in 2021, 2023 and 2025, and in 2024, the UF College of Medicine awarded him the Outstanding Research Scientist Award in Clinical, Data or Artificial Intelligence Sciences. His scientific contributions have advanced understanding of complex neurological diseases while helping improve outcomes for patients around the world.

As chair of the Lillian S. Wells Department of Neurosurgery and chief of medical staff for UF Health Shands, Dr. Hoh is widely recognized for his accomplishments as a physician, scientist, educator and academic leader. Since joining the University of Florida faculty in 2006, he has helped elevate the institution’s national reputation through outstanding contributions in patient care, research, education and service. Under his leadership as chair, the UF Department of Neurosurgery rose to the second-highest NIH-funded neurosurgery department in the country, and UF Health Shands Hospital was ranked in the top 30 for neurology and neurosurgery in the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings.

He and a multidisciplinary team were also instrumental in establishing and developing the UF Health Comprehensive Stroke Center and launching the UF Health Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit program, bringing timely, expert and compassionate care to stroke patients in Florida.

Dr. Hoh’s academic journey reflects a commitment to learning, leadership and achievement at every stage. He earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Stanford University and his medical degree with Alpha Omega Alpha honors from Columbia University, completing his residency and fellowship training in neurosurgery and endovascular neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He later earned an MBA with Beta Gamma Sigma honors at the University of Florida.

In addition to his scholarly accomplishments, Dr. Hoh is known for his collaborative leadership style, commitment to mentorship and dedication to advancing institutional excellence. He understands the unique opportunities that exist when a leading public research university and an academic health center work together to solve complex challenges and improve lives.

As dean, Dr. Hoh will lead the College of Medicine’s efforts to educate future physicians, scientists and health professionals, expand groundbreaking research initiatives and strengthen partnerships that improve health outcomes for people across Florida and beyond.
