Sullivan Named Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences

I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Neil Sullivan has been named Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences following a national search. I hope you will join me in congratulating him on this appointment.

Dr. Sullivan is a major international scholar with research interests in quantum solids and fluids, low temperature physics, and magnetic resonance studies of solids. He also has exceptional experience as an administrator. Prior to serving as interim dean, Neil was Associate Dean of Research in the college, a post he accepted after serving as chair of the Department of Physics for three terms. While department chair, he guided the construction of the new physics building and the expansion of its undergraduate and graduate programs. He was also a leader in bringing the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory to Florida.

He earned his bachelor of science (with first class honors) and his master of science degrees from Otago University in New Zealand. In 1965 Sullivan entered Harvard University on a Fulbright Fellowship where he received his Ph.D. in 1972. Prior to arriving at the University of Florida in 1982, he had served as a physicist at the Centre d’ Etudes Nuclearies in Saclay, France, a position he had held for nine years.

I have tremendous confidence in Dr. Sullivan’s ability to lead the college into the future.
