Stein Named Dean of Design, Construction and Planning

David R. Colburn, Provost

It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Jay M. Stein will continue to lead the College of Design, Construction and Planning, one of UF’s most successful colleges, as its permanent dean. After a national search that uncovered a number of other highly qualified candidates, I am delighted that Dr. Stein was interested in the permanent position.

Dr. Stein has been active and effective as the interim dean, guiding the college with a new focus and a new name, which he ushered through in 2000. He joined the College of Design, Construction and Planning in 1989 as a professor and chair in the department of urban and regional planning.

Stein holds a doctorate in urban and regional planning from the University of Michigan, a master’s from York University and a bachelor’s from SUNY at Binghamton.

Stein has held major positions in national professional organizations, including as a member of the American Planning Association. He has served on the National Planning Awards Jury and as vice-president of the Florida Chapter of APA, and authored more than 50 journal articles, book reviews and monographs.

The College of Design, Construction and Planning is one of the largest and most comprehensive design schools in the country with approximately 1,500 students, 90 faculty members and accredited degrees in the School of Architecture, M.E. Rinker Sr. School of Building Construction and departments of interior design, landscape architecture and urban and regional planning.

Dr. Stein’s appointment is effective July 1.
