Universities As Citizens: Active Learning through Engagement

The Division of Student Affairs and the J. Wayne Reitz Union’s Office of Community Service would like to invite you to a special event: Universities as Citizens. The Office of Community Service and the UF Sustainability Task Force with support from the Florida Campus Compact have invited to the University a nationally renowned speaker who will conduct a free campus-wide seminar discussing service learning, the great potential for civic engagement and partnership development in the Alachua County area. Dr. James Applegate, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, and Professor at University of Kentucky, will be our special guest speaker at the Service Learning seminar.

Universities as Citizens: Active Learning through Engagement will be held Monday, February 18, 2002, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the J. Wayne Reitz Union, 2nd Floor. The mini- conference will focus on service-learning, civic engagement and community partnership development. The schedule follows:

Registration:  9:00 – 9:30 a.m.

Opening Session: 9:30 a.m.

General Session – Featuring Dr. Applegate: 10 a.m.

Afternoon Break-Out Sessions:
Faculty Responsibility in Teaching Civic Responsibility, Integrating Service into the Curriculum, What Service Learning Can do for Agencies and the Community, The Role of the Office of Community Service, and Volunteer Liability.
