Winfred M. Phillips Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School

As you know, the Governor has proposed a statewide $100M technology initiative to set up Centers of Excellence at Florida universities. A task force chaired by Winfred Phillips, and including: Ian Phillips – vice chair (Research and Graduate Programs), Bill Luttge (Brain Institute), Charles Martin (Chemistry), Chris Stanton (Physics), Neil Sullivan (Liberal Arts & Sciences), Pramod Khargonekar (Engineering), David Norton (Engineering), Peggy Evanich (Engineering), Bill Brown (Institute for Food & Agricultural Sciences), Terence Flotte (Genetics), and Pete Pevonka (Medicine) has been formed. We are preparing an initiative in bionanotechnology, which brings together some of the greatest strengths in faculty at the University of Florida for a high tech, state- of-the-art initiative with industrial/commercialization potential for the State.

Dr. Ian Phillips, Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Programs, is putting together the proposal. We are contacting all deans to ensure that we have as much input as possible. Obviously, we may not be able to include every idea or wish, but we hope to put together a solid proposal that will bring the State money to Gainesville.

Please send your responses to Ian Phillips at ianphillips@ufl.edu by March 6, 2002. Thank you and best regards.
