New Policy and Guidelines for Wireless Networks

Chuck Frazier, Vice Provost for Information Technology

OIT Network Services, the University of Florida Health Science Center, and Shands Teaching Hospital are in the process of deploying Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) on the University of Florida campus. This infrastructure offers wireless coverage in many public areas and buildings on campus. As the network grows, however, the potential increases for interference between networks and with other devices.

To reduce this risk and to insure the highest possible level of service, the following policy and guidelines were developed in the ITAC – Network Infrastructure Committee and were subsequently reviewed and approved by the UF Information Technology Advisory Council (ITAC). The new Wireless Network Policy is available at http://www.it.ufl.edu/policies/wireless.html .

Existing University policies that apply to traditional wired network resources also apply to use of the wireless network.
