Consultation & Intervention with Troubled or Disruptive Students

In the wake of the tragedy that took place at Virginia Tech earlier this week, faculty and staff have asked for guidelines when faced with a disruptive or troubled student. With this in mind, Student Affairs is offering you an attachment with a Consultation and Intervention Decision Tree for your use. The diagram provides steps to take and resources available if the student is perceived as disruptive or troubled.

The Consultation/Intervention Decision Tree provides you with description of what a disruptive and a troubled student may manifest. Following the description, there area resources to contact depending on the circumstances. We ask that you follow the decision tree closely for assistance. Certainly if you perceive the matter to be of imminent danger, please contact University Police Department immediately at 392.1111.

Your resourcefulness and collaboration are greatly appreciated. Faculty and staff play an important role in identifying and referring troubled/disruptive students to appropriate resources. Please do not hesitate to contact the departments listed should you have any questions or simply wish to have a consultation.

Finally, we encourage every department to have an emergency protocol that will be followed by the staff and faculty in your respective area. These protocols have been helpful in minimizing any confusion and increasing the communication in your area when facing a crisis.
