Director of Institutional Assessment

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Tim Brophy, Assistant Dean for Research, Technology, and Administrative Affairs in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Florida, has accepted the position of Director of Institutional Assessment, effective June 24, 2011.

Dr. Brophy will provide guidance, oversight and coordination for the university’s academic assessment processes and their use in promoting institutional effectiveness. He will also be responsible for maintaining regional accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Dr. Brophy received his bachelor of music education from the University of Cincinnati in 1974, his Master of Music degree from the University of Memphis in 1994 and his PhD in Music Education from the University of Kentucky in 1998. Before joining the faculty of the School of Music in 2000, Dr. Brophy was an adjunct professor at the University of Memphis. In 2001, he became the NCATE/DOE program coordinator in music education. In 2009, he was named the Assistant Dean for Research and Technology in the College of Fine Arts, and 2010 his role expanded to include Administrative Affairs.

Dr. Brophy’s research interests are in music assessment and the development of children’s melodic improvisations. He is the current chair of MENC – The National Association for Music Education’s Special Research Interest Group on Assessment, and has organized the International Society for Music Education’s first Special Interest Group in Assessment. He has focused international attention on assessment in music education as the founding and organizing chair of the biennial series of International Symposia on Assessment in Music Education (ISAME).
