Acceptable Use Policy – University IT Resources

Elias G. Eldayrie, Vice President and CIO

Updates and revisions to the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for university IT resources were approved on August 17, 2011, and are now in effect.

University Information Technology (IT) resources are to be used for activities related to UF’s mission of research, teaching, clinical, and service/extension activities.   Some examples of IT resources include the computers, software, systems, networks, and electronic devices bought, developed and/or maintained in support of the university’s mission.

This Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) applies to all users of university IT resources— whether or not the users are affiliated with the university—and whether users access resources on campus or from a remote location.

The AUP is available online as: the full policy and a summary highlighting nine short rules that are easy to understand and follow. The summary is an easy reference, but does not substitute for the full AUP.  Supervisors and administrators should read and share the full updated policy with their academic and administrative staff. The Acceptable Use Policy concerns, among other matters, usage and enforcement (as applicable) of university email, Web sites, networks and infrastructure, wireless devices, and virtual private networks (VPNs). Security, privacy, and record retention issues are also addressed. The AUP now includes UF’s policy on the Monitoring of University Information Technology Resources and Retrieval of Communications.

All current policies related to computing, email, information security and compliance, and other IT-related topics may be found on the UFIT Web site:  http://www.it.ufl.edu/policies which will be updated as needed.
