New Director of the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience

Joseph Glover, Provost and Senior Vice President

It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Mark Q. Martindale, Director of the Kewalo Marine Laboratory at the University of Hawaii has been appointed Director of the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience as of January 1, 2013. He will be replacing Peter Anderson who has served as Director for 16 years.

Mark received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin and completed a postdoctoral appointment at Harvard Medical School before joining the faculty of the University of Chicago. He moved to Hawaii in 1998 and assumed the duties of Director of the Kewalo Marine Laboratory in 2007.

Mark was trained as an experimental embryologist and has been a major contributor to the field of the evolution and development (evo-devo), a field of biology that seeks to discover how developmental processes have contributed to the evolution of biological diversity. He is Co-Editor in Chief of the open access journal EvoDevo and serves on the editorial boards of several of the major journals in the field. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a full member of Sigma Xi, the former Chair of the Division of Evolutionary Developmental Biology at the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology and a recent recipient of the Alexander Kowalevsky Medal for Comparative Embryology of St. Petersburg Society of Naturalists.

His research and teaching has taken him to marine laboratories throughout the world and, all together will bring considerable experience to the position. I hope you will join me in welcoming Mark to the University of Florida.
