The University of Florida is engaged in a search for a person to serve in the position of Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The search committee had its first meeting on April 17th and President Lombardi established a very tight time line for the committee. The success of this important search will depend on the quality of candidates in the pool. Therefore, the faculty, staff and university community have a responsibility to submit nominations of qualified individuals in a timely manner. The deadline for nominations is May 1, 1996, and the application deadline for the position is May 15, 1996.
This position is a position of high-level responsibility within the university and involves a significant leadership role. The Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer and the second ranking officer of the University, acting for the President in his absence. In these capacities the Provost supervises the allocation of resources in academic areas, improvement of instruction, coordination of instructional activities, development and improvement of research activities, evaluation of university academic activity, establishment of policy with respect to employment, promotion and tenure of academic faculty and implementation of the University’s Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Program.

PROVOST/VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs for the University of Florida. The Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer and the second ranking officer of the University, acting for the President in his absence. In these capacities the Provost supervises the allocation of resources in academic areas, improvement of instruction, coordination of instructional activities, development and improvement of research activities, evaluation of university academic activity, establishment of policy with respect to employment, promotion and tenure of academic faculty and implementation of the University’s Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Program.
Desired qualifications include faculty and administrative experience at a research university, an appreciation for the role of a land-grant university and the academic credentials that meet the criteria of a full professor with tenure in an academic department of the university. The Provost must have the skills necessary to articulate the University’s mission, values and needs clearly and to communicate them persuasively to external and internal constituencies including those in the State University System. The Provost should recognize Florida’s unique position in the international arena.
Gainesville is a city of approximately 100,000 in north-central Florida. The University of Florida, the largest and oldest public university in the state, is a residential, land-grant institution and a member of the Association of American Universities. The University, with approximately 40,000 students, 30,000 undergraduates (76%) and 10,000 graduate and professional students (24%), offers about 100 undergraduate degree programs. The Graduate School coordinates 200 graduate programs throughout the university’s colleges and schools, both master’s and doctoral levels. Emphasis on research is indicated by the awarding of contracts and grants totaling over $200 million in 1994-95. The wide range of advanced professional and graduate programs has resulted in the establishment of over 100 interdisciplinary research and teaching centers throughout the University.
