VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH AND DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL

Applications and nominations are invited for the position of vice president for research and dean of the graduate school for the University of Florida. The vice president for research reports to the president of the university and is the director of the university’s Office of Research, Technology, and Graduate Education (ORTGE). The vice president for research, as the director of ORTGE, is responsible for facilitating research and transfer of technology at the University of Florida.

Duties and Responsibilities: The vice president carries out the responsibilities of the Division of Sponsored Research. The division was established by an act of the Florida Legislature in 1963 to support and foster research and sponsored training at the university, recognizing that research is essential to excellence in education and that its development is essential in providing maximum service to the state.

The vice president for research is also the president of the University of Florida Research Foundation, Inc. (UFRF), a non-profit direct support organization of the university to support and assist technology transfer at the university. The UFRF is overseen by a board of directors chaired by the president of the university.

The vice president for research and dean of the graduate school is also the chief administrative officer of the Graduate School, and in that capacity reports to the provost and works closely with college deans to promote and support graduate education at the University of Florida.

Gainesville is a city of approximately 150,000 in North Central Florida. The University of Florida, the largest and oldest public university in the state, is a residential, land-grant institution and a member of the Association of American Universities. The university, with approximately 42,000 students (including 32,000 undergraduate, 1,100 professional and 8,500 graduate students), plans to increase the number of graduate students to 12,000 over the next eight years.

The Graduate School coordinates more than 200 graduate programs throughout the university’s colleges and schools at the master’s and doctoral levels. Emphasis on research is indicated by more than $190 million of sponsored research expenditures in 1996. There are more than 100 interdisciplinary research and teaching centers at the university. The University of Florida is a member of the State University System of the State of Florida, which includes ten public universities and is governed by the Board of Regents.
