The University of Florida is strongly committed to the health and safety of all members of the University community. As such, a comprehensive plan has been developed that addresses steps taken to protect the health of the community in regards to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). The plan emphasizes up-to-date and ongoing education, promotes disease prevention, and outlines steps that that will be taken should an actual case of SARS be identified on campus. Information and UF guidelines concerning SARS are available at the UF Homepage, www.ufl.edu , by clicking on “Health and Safety” under “Current Interests.” These documents are reviewed and updated regularly and have been developed in collaboration with health authorities from Alachua County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

UF students and staff traveling abroad are urged to stay informed and current in their knowledge and understanding of this disease. It is the responsibility of all UF travelers returning from a SARS affected region to contact Student Health Care Center (SHCC) Administration at (352) 392-1161 Ext. 1-4217 to discuss personal precautions to take to protect themselves and others.

Likewise, it is the responsibility of UF staff coordinating international meetings or programs to first contact SHCC Administration at (352) 392-1161 Ext 1-4217 prior to bringing groups or individuals to campus. Pre-planning for these events will ensure that appropriate public health measures are in place and will be followed.

An educational document has been created in a Question/Answer format for UF employees that will increase individual awareness of SARS and also inform employees of the steps being taken to protect the public health and safety of the University community. The document is available at: http://www.health.ufl.edu/shcc/pdf/sarsemployee.pdf .

Should you or your staff have additional questions or concerns regarding SARS, please feel free to contact SHCC Administration at 392-1161 Ext 1-4217 or e-mail at sars@nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu .
