Leadership development is an essential component in the Effective management of a university. Accordingly, we are pleased to announce the new Advanced Leadership for Academics and Professionals program. Developed in cooperation with the UF Provost’s Office, the Faculty Senate, Human Resource Services, and the Office of the Sr. Vice President for Administration and Business Ventures, this program is designed for academics and professionals who wish to further explore and develop their leadership skills. It will provide the opportunity to work with peers within the University while cultivating the individual skills that are needed to be a more effective manager and leader.

This new program replaces the Next Level Leadership program that has been available in the past. Offering two tracks—one for academic leaders and the other for professional staff—the Advanced Leadership for Academics and Professionals program is based on leadership competencies that have been specifically identified as important for success at UF. To learn more about UF’s competency model, visit http://www.hr.ufl.edu/training/leadership/competencies.asp. The competency model was developed from best practices of our AAU peers and from interviews and focus groups with successful professional and academic leaders at UF. Program participants will participate within their track for certain development activities; at other times, the tracks will come together.

Applications to participate will be accepted October 1-30. Participants will be selected via a competitive application process and will be announced in mid-November. The program will begin in January 2010 and will meet six times over the course of 2010—typically 1.5 days each time.

This year, we are pleased to be able to reduce the fee to participate in this program from $1000 per participant to $750. All materials (including a 360-degree evaluation pre- and post-program), facilitation fees, and meals are included with no travel needed for those who work in Gainesville.

For more information, including program dates and times, please contact UF Training and Org. Development at training@ufl.edu or visit http://www.hr.ufl.edu/training/leadership/alap.asp.

This program represents an invaluable opportunity for professional development, including exposure to UF’s highest levels of administration. Given the array of challenges the university currently faces, leadership development is increasingly essential as we equip our current and future leaders to support the institution.

Please join us in encouraging appropriate leaders in your area to submit an application for the Advanced Leadership for Academics and Professionals program.
