Formal Notice of Change in Family and Medical Leave Act Entitlement Year

Larry Ellis, Director

Under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), employees are entitled to up to 12 workweeks of protected leave for FMLA-qualifying events in a 12-month period.

This memo is designed to serve as official notice that effective January 7, 2003, the 12-month period used to track FMLA entitlement was changed from the UF fiscal year to a “rolling” year. This means that an employee’s first date of absence for an FMLA-qualifying event will also be the start date of that employee’s entitlement year. Each employee using FMLA-protected leave, therefore, will have a unique 12-month entitlement period.

Because this change is occurring in the middle of the 2002-03 fiscal year, please see our administrative guidelines web site (http://www.hr.ufl.edu/tr ansition/leave.htm) for information about how to track the FMLA entitlement appropriately for all UF employees during the transition from fiscal year to rolling year. Your help in ensuring employees in your area are aware of this change also would be appreciated.
