Charles E. Frazier, Vice Provost for Information Technology

This weekend we will be bringing on-line the new UF Directory and computer application systems that have been modified to use as identifiers the new UFID numbers instead of Social Security numbers. Card reader systems that use the Gator 1 Card – for example, gated parking, libraries, and student rec centers – will be converting from SSN to UFID beginning April 1, 2003. Employees and students who have not yet obtained a new Gator 1 card should do so by April 1.

On Tuesday, January 21, the new Directory will be available to authorized Directory Coordinators via the Manage Directory Information (1264) application available on the Admin Menu. This new application will replace the Electronic Phone Book Maintenance System, and the role of Phone Book Coordinator will no longer exist. Training of new Directory Coordinators began January 10 and will continue through January 24, with additional sessions added as needed. The training handout and schedule are available at http://www.it.ufl.edu/projects/directory/ (under Directory Coordinators section).

A new, Web-based, self-service application will also be available to the University community January 21 on the Directory Web site (http://directory.ufl.edu). This new application will allow individuals to update or add some of their own contact information (e.g., addresses, phone numbers, nickname) stored in the new UF Directory. Users will be required to enter a GatorLink ID and password to edit their Directory information.

All employees should have received their new UFID number in the mail last week. Students should receive their UFID numbers in the mail this week. To increase awareness, we are placing posters in central areas throughout campus. In addition, the UFID Web site (http://ufid.ufl.edu) has available a downloadable 8.5 x 11 poster in a .pdf file. I encourage academic departments to place this poster in their main office, mailroom, hallways, etc. Given that the conversion happens this weekend, these posters should go up immediately and remain up for about one month.

For general questions about the UFID number and UF Directory Project, please email the University Directory Administrator at ufid@ufl.edu. For technical questions, please email the UF Directory Team at baufdir@nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu.

I thank you and your staff for all your hard work and cooperation in this important project.
