Bernie Machen, President

I have named Vice President for Research Dr. Winfred M. Phillips to direct the university’s initiative with Scripps Florida. In this additional responsibility, Dr. Phillips will coordinate UF’s affiliation with Scripps in developing research partnerships and graduate education programs. The appointment is effective Feb. 1.

Due to the significance, anticipated time commitment and complexity of this assignment, I have asked Dr. Phillips to devote considerable attention to his new duties and I have asked him to no longer serve as dean of the Graduate School. He will continue his responsibilities as vice president for research. I will name an interim dean for the Graduate School later this week.

In directing UF’s affiliation with Scripps, Dr. Phillips will identify and coordinate joint research programs that match University and Scripps researchers, resources and facilities. He also will lead scholarly exchanges between UF and the biomedical research institute. In addition, Dr. Phillips will work with Scripps in the development of graduate education programs and internships for UF students.
