I am pleased to announce that Dr. Bernard Mair, Associate Dean in the UF College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, has been appointed to serve as Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs effective April 1, 2009.

Dr. Mair has served as Associate Chair and Graduate Coordinator in the UF mathematics department and head of the mathematics department at North Carolina State University.

Dr. Mair received his B.Sc. (First Class Hons.) and M.Sc. from University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, and Ph.D. from McGill University, Montreal. He held faculty positions at The Pennsylvania State University and Texas Tech University before joining the University of Florida in 1989. Dr. Mair received a UF teaching award in 1998, directed an NSF funded REU program, and has been actively involved in policy, mentoring, and student-related educational activities at UF. He was a founding member and secretary of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Activity Group on Imaging Sciences. Dr. Mair’s interdisciplinary research in numerical optimization, statistics, and medical imaging has attracted funding from the NSF, ONR, and NIH.
