Every two years the UF Alumni Association (UFAA) selects a faculty member to receive the “Distinguished Alumni Professor” (DAP) Award. The title holder, serves as an ambassador of the university’s academic and research achievements to The Gator Nation®. As we continue the preeminence journey, we hope you will assist us by identifying faculty members of the highest caliber to represent University of Florida.

The recipient of the DAP Award serves on the UFAA Board of Directors for a two-year term and participates in Alumni Association programs, including speaking at signature events, such as the Grand Guard Reunion (celebrates 50 year anniversary of graduation) and at Gator Club® functions to the degree that his/her schedule permits. In return, the Alumni Association awards the recipient a $20,000 stipend, to be paid in four installments over the two-year term. Additional funds are provided by the Office of Academic Affairs to be utilized for items such as research and travel support (may not be used for salary augmentation).

The deadline for applications is Monday, February 16, 2015. Completed applications should be submitted to Ms. Ana Barrenechea, Director of Building Alliances—Alumni Affairs, and include a signed applicant information form (see attached), Curriculum Vitae, a personal statement of research interest (one-page), and a letter of recommendation from the college Dean or department Chair/Director and endorsement of the nomination by the College Dean.

2015-2017 Application Information

Background

The Distinguished Alumni Professor Award (“DAP Award”) was originated by Bruce Flower in 1978. Initially, Bruce Flower, Robert Bryan, Steve Wilkerson, Michael Gannon and Samuel Proctor formulated the basic plans for the award. The recipient of the DAP Award is asked to serve on the Alumni Association Board of Directors for a two-year term, and work with the Alumni Association in various programs (to the degree that his/her schedule permits) including speaking at Club events, Gator Nation U and the Phil Griffin Distinguished Lecture Series. In return, the Alumni Association awards the recipient a $20,000 stipend, to be paid in four installments over the two-year term. Additional funds are provided by the Office of Academic Affairs to be utilized for items such as research and travel support (may not be used for salary augmentation). The DAP will begin their term in the Fall semester of 2015 and end in the summer of 2017. The official installation will take place September at the UFAA’s annual Gator Gala.

Selection Criteria
1. The professor has gained a reputation among students and alumni for being a superior and highly influential teacher.
2. The professor has gained a reputation for having immeasurable positive impact on students.
3. The professor’s service to the University, State and Nation has resulted in truly beneficial contributions and has brought significant distinction to UF.
4. The professor should be a member of the current teaching faculty and have been on faculty for at least 10 years.
5. The professor must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of constituencies about his/her research, the Alumni Association and the University of Florida.
6. Strong consideration will be given to those holding the title of Distinguished Professor at the University of Florida. (See http://fora.aa.ufl.edu/go/71 for more information regarding UF’s Distinguished Professors).

Selection Process

Nominating Committee – All potential candidates will be submitted to the Nominating Committee for initial review. The Nominating Committee will review the candidate’s curriculum vitae and accompanying information (i.e. letters of recommendation, personal statement of research, etc.) and develop a slate of nominees to present to the Selection Committee. The Nominating Committee’s selection will be based upon the Selection Criteria listed above. The slate will have no less than 3 but no more than 6 nominees. Each candidate must have a minimum of 3 votes to qualify for the slate. Members of the Nominating Committee include:

• Outgoing DAP member
• UFAA Director of Building Alliances
• UFAA Building Alliances Committee Chair (Alumnus)
• Cicerone President (Student)
• Provost designate

Selection Committee – The Selection Committee will select the DAP Award recipient from the slate provided by the Nominating Committee. The selection process will be based upon (1) the Selection Criteria, (2) review of the materials presented by the Nominating Committee, and (3) nominee interviews and presentations. A nominee must have at least 3 votes to receive the DAP Award.
