Jefferson Science Fellows: Application Deadline September 24, 2004

I am pleased to announce that UF will again participate in the 2005 Jefferson Science Fellow (JSF) Program of the U.S. State Department. UF can nominate two faculty members for consideration in this nationwide competition. A total of five Fellows will be selected for the 2005 program to work for a year in Washington, D.C. and abroad on science and technology issues that are of critical importance to U.S. Government policy.

Those interested in being considered to be a nominee from UF must be:

  1. A U.S. citizen;
  2. A tenured faculty member;
  3. Recommended by their department chair and endorsed by their respective dean.

The JSF Program is designed to select scientists, technologists and engineers for one-year fellowships with the U.S. Department of State. If selected, the fellow will spend the year on assignment in Washington D.C. with the possibility of extended stays at American embassies abroad.

The five awardees will be notified by the middle of December and announced to the public in January 2005. The 2005 Jefferson Science Fellow will report to the Department of State on or about August 15, 2005. The fellows will be tasked with helping to provide science, technology and engineering advice to be used in the formulation and implementation of U.S. Government policy, both domestic and foreign.

UF will pay the salary and benefits if the faculty member is selected as a fellow for the year and the JSF Program will provide a stipend of $50,000 to offset the costs associated with living temporarily in Washington.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee at UF to select the two nominees to be are submitted to Washington. Applications must be submitted by noon, September 24, 2004.
