Provost Lucinda Lavelli of the North Carolina School of the Arts has been named Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Florida, effective July 1, 2006. Provost Lavelli earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Denison University and her Master of Fine Arts and Master’s of Nonprofit Management, both at Case Western Reserve University.

Prior to working at the North Carolina School of the Arts, where she has been since 2002, Lavelli served as director of the School of Dance as well as the director of Theatre and Arts Administration at the University of Akron. From 1981 to 1993, she served as Chair of Performing Arts and Director of Dance at the Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, Ohio.

There is continuing dialog at UF around the role of fine arts in a research university and in the lives of the members of that community. With her experiences as a performer and as an academic administrator, Provost Lavelli will enlighten that discussion and elevate it to a more prominent place.

Please join me in welcoming Dean Lavelli to the University of Florida.
