Effective July 1, 2007, the Florida Legislature passed significant changes to the laws relating to Veterans’ Preference.

CHANGES TO RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION PROCEDURES:

Preference eligibility no longer expires upon appointment of the eligible person to a position with the state or any political subdivision in the state.

Current or previous employment with the state (or any covered entity) should no longer be considered when determining preference eligibility.

In summary, this law establishes “perpetual” entitlement for veteran preference for eligible persons, thus eliminating the “single entitlement event” and provides for increased employment opportunities statewide for all affected veterans and spouses of veterans.
