I am pleased to announce that Dr. Cammy Abernathy, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering at the University of Florida, has accepted the position of Dean of the College of Engineering, effective July 17, 2009.

Cammy R. Abernathy received her S.B. degree in materials science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in materials science and engineering from Stanford University in 1982 and 1985 respectively. After receiving her Ph.D. she worked for AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey as a member of technical staff. In 1993, she joined the University of Florida’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering. In 2004, she became the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering.

At the University of Florida, she has received the MSE Department Award for faculty excellence three times, in 1997, 1998, & 2003, and held the Alumni Chair in Materials Science and Engineering from 2001 to 2004. She was named a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society in 2000, an AVS Distinguished Lecturer in 2001, and a Fellow of the AVS in 2002.

Dr. Abernathy’s research interests are in synthesis and characterization of thin-film semiconductor materials and in the development of novel oxides for compound semiconductor device structures.
