Revised Haiti Policy for Travel by Faculty, Staff, and Students

The State of Florida recently discontinued its travel directives on Haiti that prohibited state personnel travel to Haiti without registering and obtaining prior approval from the state emergency official or federal authorities. In light of this change, the university is issuing this revised Haiti travel policy for UF Travel. This policy supersedes the UF DDDs dated January 15, 2010 and February 5, 2010 and applies until further notice. A high level overview of the UF policy is below. — UF strongly urges UF faculty and staff to review and take with utmost seriousness the Haiti travel warnings at http://travel.state.gov/, http://www.cdc.gov/, http://www.who.int/en/;

— UF Travel to Haiti by undergraduate students is not permitted;

— UF Travel to Haiti by graduate students is not permitted as a general rule. However, in exceptional circumstances, a waiver permitting travel to Haiti may be available. The waiver request must be submitted at least two weeks in advance of requested travel to, and must be approved by, the Dean of the International Center (David Sammons) as a precondition to UF Travel. Requirements and procedures for applying for a graduate student waiver are available on the UF International Center website: http://www.ufic.ufl.edu;

— UF faculty, staff or other (non-student) personnel are free to make their own informed decision whether to travel to Haiti, as long as the traveler has medical and evacuation insurance coverage for such travel. No International Center approval is required. However, any UF faculty, staff or other (non-student) personnel who decide to undertake UF Travel to Haiti must sign UF’s travel form (available on the UF International Center website: http://www.ufic.ufl.edu) and file the signed form with the Dean of the International Center before departure.
