Appointment of new provost

It is my pleasure to announce that Joe Glover, interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been named provost of the University of Florida. Joe will assume his new duties July 1, 2008.

After much consideration, I decided to appoint someone from within the university who has the knowledge and experience to help UF during this difficult period, when there is a fiscal crisis as well as a statewide struggle over governance in higher education.

In collaboration with dozens of people from across campus, three programs have been designed to assist you in reducing expenditures on printed materials, including photocopies. The objective is to reduce costs through improved efficiencies, better pricing and smarter practices – not by compromising communications effectiveness.

The Board of the University Women’s Club has approved four (4) scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to be awarded to graduate students this year. The student must, at least, be completing the first year of graduate study and must be a US citizen and permanent resident.

March 31 Endowment Spending Bases

As you will recall, the endowment spending bases were adjusted upwards at September 30 and December 31. In January, the UFF Finance Committee approved a special additional increase, raising the ratio of spending base/market value to 90%. But as you also know, the investment markets have been very poor in the last quarter.

UF photographers from News and Public Affairs shot all of the pictures included in the book, most of which have never been seen. In addition, our own Mr. Two Bits wrote the foreword. We are now accepting applications to establish Equipment Use Fees as allowed by the Florida Statutes FS1009.24(13)(n).

The Equipment Use Fee program allows units to charge for significant equipment that is used to prepare students for their career or profession and is used for instructional purposes only with direct use by the students.
