2007-2008 Fiscal Year End Closing

It is that time of year again to prepare for the annual closing of the fiscal year. The 2007-2008 fiscal year ends on June 30, 2008. The scheduled date for closing the General Ledger for the 2008 fiscal year is Friday, July 18, 2008.

PeopleSoft Finance Upgrade Postponed

As a result of budget reductions for FY 08-09, all technical work for the Finance System Upgrade will be temporarily postponed. Pre-planning efforts for the upgrade will continue as scheduled. This includes identifying business needs, documenting and measuring business processes and writing the project charter.

UF Budget for FY 08-09 to be reduced by $47 million

In response to the budget adopted last Friday by the Florida Legislature, we are today announcing cuts that correspond to declining state revenues.

Some of those budget reductions are outlined below. I asked each vice president, dean and director to reduce spending by 6 percent for the fiscal year that begins July 1. Taken together, these cuts total $47 million.

It is my pleasure to announce that Joe Glover, interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been named provost of the University of Florida. Joe will assume his new duties July 1, 2008.

After much consideration, I decided to appoint someone from within the university who has the knowledge and experience to help UF during this difficult period, when there is a fiscal crisis as well as a statewide struggle over governance in higher education.

In collaboration with dozens of people from across campus, three programs have been designed to assist you in reducing expenditures on printed materials, including photocopies. The objective is to reduce costs through improved efficiencies, better pricing and smarter practices – not by compromising communications effectiveness.

March 31 Endowment Spending Bases

As you will recall, the endowment spending bases were adjusted upwards at September 30 and December 31. In January, the UFF Finance Committee approved a special additional increase, raising the ratio of spending base/market value to 90%. But as you also know, the investment markets have been very poor in the last quarter.
