A Program in Higher Education of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation

The University of Florida is among the top U.S. research universities invited to submit an application to the Hewlett Foundation’s program to improve general education in research universities. Up to 10 two-year grants of $100,000-$150,000 will be awarded in spring 2000. This program would provide the opportunity to enhance our general education program to prepare our undergraduates for more advanced learning experiences.

Student Employment Appointment(s)

A reminder that students who are enrolled half-time or greater must be appointed through the Student Employment Section of Student Financial Affairs. The only exception to the rule will be for graduate assistants.

Under no circumstances should a student be appointed with a Job Code “B” and a Job Code “U” during the same period of employment. Upon detection, Student Employment Staff members will notify the employing department payroll processor that the SP/100 (Student Assistant Appointment Form) can not be processed.

As of July 1, 1999, all Cash Expense Refunds should be sent directly to University Financial Services at P.O. Box 114050 (S-113 Criser Hall). Cash Expense Refunds should not be sent to University Disbursement Services. University Disbursement Services personnel will be happy to assist you with information on completing the form. Please remember to obtain approval from Contract & Grant Accounting Services before submitting Cash Expense Refunds to University Financial Services for restricted grants.

Amendment to Operating Capital Outlay Definition

Effective July 1, 1999, the definition of operating capital outlay (OCO) as provided in Chapter 216, Florida Statutes, is amended. The dollar value of OCO increases from $500 to $1,000 for equipment, fixtures, and other tangible personal property of a nonconsumable and nonexpendable nature. In addition, the value of hardback-covered bound books to be recorded as OCO increases from $100 to $250.

Announcement of Interim Dean of International Programs

I am pleased to announce that David Colburn will serve as Interim Dean of International Programs effective immediately. As you know we have begun a review and reorganization of the Office of International Programs. We will conclude that review under his direction and then take the steps necessary to strengthen and enhance the program. When we conclude that process, we will be in a much better position to identify a permanent Dean for this position.
