University of Florida’s Brechner Center Director Heads New FOI Project; Assistant Director To Take Over as Brechner Center Director

As a result of a major new freedom of information initiative to be conducted out of the University of Florida’s Brechner Center for Freedom of Information, the center’s long-time director and eminent scholar Bill Chamberlin is leaving the center director position to assume responsibility as director of the new project.

Assistant director of the Brechner Center, associate professor and media law attorney Sandra Chance will take over as Brechner Center director. The changes are effective July 1.

University of Florida Appoints Knight Chair in Journalism Technologies and the Democratic Process

Melinda (Mindy) McAdams has been appointed the first Knight Chair in Journalism Technologies and the Democratic Process at the University’s College of Journalism and Communications.

As Knight Chair, McAdams will design and teach undergraduate and graduate courses and conduct research focusing on how technologies used to gather, analyze and disseminate news contribute to journalism’s role in developing a more informed citizenry.

The University has awarded a new contract for maintenance insurance to Specialty Underwriters to begin July 1, 1999. The equipment currently on the program will be automatically converted to the new program unless you notify Specialty to the contrary.

It is time to begin planning for June 30, 1999, year-end closing. Departments are encouraged to submit invoices for payment as early as possible to ensure payment from current year funds. Outstanding encumbrances should be reviewed and any which are not needed should be closed. Each year Academic Affairs offers the opportunity to extend current assignments for 12 month OPS faculty, post-doctoral employees, residents, interns, clinical fellows, and 12 month graduate assistants (Job Code C) in the personnel/payroll system into the new fiscal year via a computer listing. I am pleased to announce that Dr. Gerardo Gonzalez will serve as Interim Dean of the College of Education beginning July 3, 1999. Dr. Gonzalez has served as Associate Dean of the College of Education from 1993 to the present, and prior to that was Chair of the Department of Counselor Education. A national search for a permanent dean will begin immediately with the anticipation of appointment of a dean by the beginning of the Fall semester 2000.
