In response to two grievances filed by the Graduate Assistants United-UFF, a settlement was reached by the Florida Board of Education, for the University of Florida, on 12/24/02 with the concurrence of the Provost and the Vice President for Research and Graduate Education.

Effective January 17, 2003, the Instructor title will no longer be used in the Academic Personnel Plan. All faculty who have the Instructor title will have his/her title changed to the Lecturer title. The Lecturer title will have three academic levels: Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Master Lecturer. For a faculty member to advance to Senior Lecturer or Master Lecturer, he/she would have to go through the promotion process at the appropriate time.
